Vacancy Overview

Applications are invited for a new Chair in Sociology and Quantitative Methods in the Department of Sociology.

This is one of eight new permanent posts that will join an existing team of quantitative social science scholars as part of the Warwick Q-Step Centre. Whilst based in Sociology, you will be a member of a broader team within the new Warwick Q-Step Centre.

You will be an outstanding sociologist with an international reputation for the development or creative application of quantitative social research methods. You will have made significant contributions to quantitative social science, broadly defined, and will be required to deliver high quality publications in sociology to complement the Department of Sociology’s existing research profile and to enhance its future REF submissions.

Applications are encouraged across the full range of research fields in sociology, social statistics and quantitative social research. We would especially welcome applications from candidates with expertise across a range of quantitative approaches, including: methods for analysing longitudinal/event history data; spatial statistics and/or GIS and 3-D modelling; Bayesian statistics; computational social science (e.g. agent-based simulation); social networks; digital methods and data visualisation; comparative case based quantitative methods such as QCA, correspondence analysis, cluster analysis, and other related data mining and classificatory methods; big data and/or an appreciation of the methodological challenges that big data research presents. Experience of curriculum development and implementation in the context of quantitative methods teaching are essential, with experience in online delivery and assessment being advantageous.

Applications from international scholars and those of a minority ethnic background are particularly welcome as these groups are currently under-represented within the department.

JOB PURPOSE:

To develop individual and collaborative bids for external research funding, and to teach quantitative methods and related material within the department's new and existing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, which may include shared teaching with Politics and International Studies and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies and teaching within the Faculty’s Doctoral Training Centre.

To develop a sustained record of research income generation, be an enthusiastic and effective teacher, and have the ability to provide inspirational leadership in the area of quantitative methods and research in sociology.

Closing date: 10 Jan 2014
