MRC PhD Studentship (University of Cambridge) Vitamin D metabolism in pregnancy

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship, funded by the MRC, to commence in October 2014, in the Nutrition and Bone Health Research Group. The Group undertakes research into nutrition and lifestyle factors for the optimisation of bone health and the reduction of osteoporosis and rickets risk within the wider context of nutrition policy for calcium and vitamin D in developed and developing countries. Pregnancy is associated with unique changes in vitamin D-related metabolism. The drivers of these changes and their possible role in maternal and neonatal health outcomes are unclear. This PhD project aims to better understand pregnancy-related changes in vitamin D metabolism, the relationships between maternal and neonatal vitamin D status, and their determinants.  The PhD will use mass spectrometry and other biochemical methods to investigate vitamin D metabolites and metabolism during pregnancy and early life in different populations.
