Applications are invited for a 2-year MD (Res) studentship. The studentship provides a tax-free stipend (£18,000 rising by £500 each year) in addition to covering tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.
This is a clinical project based in the field of age related macular degeneration. It aims to look at predictors of disease response and visual outcome in patients receiving anti-VEGF therapy.

Studentship Description
The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology carries out research in state-of-the-art laboratories adjacent to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust. The Institute achieved the highest possible ratings in the last four Research Assessment Exercises, demonstrating sustained excellence across a wide range of activities from basic sciences to clinically-related translational study. This is an ideal environment for research training.
The MD student will benefit from state-of-art facilities within the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences. The successful candidate will gain experience in cell biology, molecular biology and advanced microscopy techniques, and develop an understanding of the cornea and corneal disease. The project will benefit a student who wishes to establish a career in Biomedical Science.
Person Specification
The Studentship would suit an ophthalmologist who is interested in the field of medical retina. The clinical sessions are based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Research sessions are based at the Institute of Ophthalmology in the Division of ORBIT under the supervision of Professor Sue Lightman. Additional clinics and projects may be available within Professor Lightman’s adult and paediatric uveitis clinics at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Candidates should be bright, independent and highly motivated but willing and able to work effectively as part of a team.
