Research Fellow in Experimental Cold Atom Physics

Salary:  £30,424 per annum Start Date:  1 February 2014, or some other mutually agreed date Fixed Term:  30 months Wave-particle duality predicts that atoms behave as waves, which can interfere. The experimental implementation of this, atom interferometry, has become an established tool for precision metrology. This project is on ring-shaped atom traps for precise rotation sensing. In particular we will use our recently developed holographic techniques to study persistent currents in ring traps, with the goal of realising the atomic-gas analogue of a superconducting quantum interference device. Through collaboration with the Atom Optics group at Strathclyde, we will encompass a broad range of physical regimes to explore the potential of ring traps for rotation sensing. Centre for Cutaneous Research Development of 3-dimensional in vitro systems for the assessment of therapeutic responses of cancer stem cells. A postdoctoral research associate position is available at the Blizard Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. The research will focus on the development and testing of 3-dimensional models of head and neck cancers for drug development. Recent research points to important roles of sub-populations of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in the growth and spread of cancers. Of particular interest, CSCs are several-fold more resistant to therapeutic killing, a property likely to be related to tumour recurrence.
