Griffith's School of Applied Psychology is recognised as one of the leading departments of psychology in Australia. We have teaching initiatives in the School that have been benchmarked as national best practice, and many of our staff have received national awards for excellence in teaching. The focus of the School is on innovative applications of psychology which we promote through an emphasis on work-integrated learning and skills development taught by a comparatively high proportion of professional psychologists.
This is a five year fixed term position as Professor, and a three year term as Head of School, with the possibility of renewal for a further two years by mutual agreement. An underlying continuing Professorial position may be negotiated.
The role:
The Head of School is a key leadership role within the University and is responsible for the performance of the School in research, learning & teaching, external engagement, and for planning and aligning financial and staff resources with the University's strategic objectives. The Head of School works collaboratively with colleagues inside and outside the School to achieve high quality outcomes in all School activities. The role calls for leadership as well as management capabilities, to ensure widespread support for advancing the School's vision and direction, especially its commitment to quality and distinctiveness. This will include appropriate strategies to enable all academic and administrative staff to achieve to the best of their capacity, and strategies to enable transparent and efficient governance. As Applied Psychology is a cross-campus School, the Head will provide leadership in maintaining and enhancing the School as a unified academic element, as well as sound management in ensuring the most efficient delivery of its activities across the two campuses.
The Head represents the School not only within the University, but also externally, and a key part of the role is to promote the School in the wider community, both locally and more widely. This includes working with Griffith's External Relations and Development & Alumni to build relationships with external groups and individuals and secure external funding and other support to help the School achieve its objectives.
As a Professor, the substantive position will include research and some teaching (to be determined). Details of Griffith's expectations for a level E position can be found in the University's Academic Work @ Griffith document, but in broad terms the position will be expected to advance research productivity, including attracting external grant income, in the relevant discipline; and to lead innovative teaching in the discipline.
The person:
The appointee will possess strong visionary, strategic and collegial management skills, with a record of quality research and scholarship in a discipline relevant to the School. The appointee will also have outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with all stakeholders.
Salary:
An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated.
