Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Centre for Cutaneous Research Development of 3-dimensional in vitro systems for the assessment of therapeutic responses of cancer stem cells. A postdoctoral research associate position is available at the Blizard Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. The research will focus on the development and testing of 3-dimensional models of head and neck cancers for drug development. Recent research points to important roles of sub-populations of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in the growth and spread of cancers. Of particular interest, CSCs are several-fold more resistant to therapeutic killing, a property likely to be related to tumour recurrence. This raises the need to discover drugs with effective actions in killing them. This effort has now been rendered more complex by the demonstration that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) reversibly switches CSCs between a sessile epithelial phenotype and a motile EMT phenotype. In these man...

Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Grade 7 (£29,541-£36,298) Closing Date: 25 November 2013 Postdoctoral position in the Laboratory of Professor Karim Labib, to study the mechanisms and regulation of chromosome replication in eukaryotic cells. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the laboratory of Karim Labib, to study how the chromosome replication machinery in eukaryotes is regulated by phosphorylation and ubiquitylation, in order to preserve genome integrity. We have found that components of the replisome are regulated by phosphorylation and ubiquitylation, both during the normal process of chromosome replication, and also in response to replication defects that activate the protein kinases of the ‘S-phase checkpoint pathway’. The aim of the project will be to understand the mechanisms that underlie this regulation, allowing eukaryotic cells to regulate replisome function and preserve genome integrity. Progress in this area could ultimately be exploited to devise improved strategies to t...
