Graphene-polymer composites have been studied extensively in recent years, for enhanced strength, electrical conductivity, etc. These can have applications in a variety of industries from automotive to bio-materials. In this particular project, we will be exploring graphene-elastomer composites for enhanced properties.
This PDRA and will require good skills in production and handling of graphene dispersions and polymer processing. The project will also require mechanical, electrical and thermal testing of the graphene/polymer composite. This project is sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The University of Manchester is widely recognized as the birthplace of Graphene, leading to the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for Prof. Geim and Prof. Novoselov. Recently, Manchester was awarded the £60 Million National Graphene Institute. There are currently over 15 academics and 100 researchers in total working on Graphene at Manchester, maintaining the lead in graphene research in terms of people, publications and citations.
