Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. The position is to work with Dr Caroline Colijn, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The main topics of the research project for this position are to identify properties of phylogenetic trees that can be used to summarise trees and compare them to each other, and to characterise the distributions of these features under relevant models. For example, the number of clades of the tree with very high imbalance, or very high or low numbers of particular small motifs might be such a property. The overall aim of the grant is to develop methods to understand the ecology of infectious diseases using sequence data. There is considerable potential for the candidate to take a leading and creative role in this research programme.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in mathematics or an equivalent level of professional qualifications and should have expertise in probability and/or combinatorics. A demonstrated good track record of high quality original research in probability, combinatorics or a related discipline is essential. The successful candidate must have affinity with discrete mathematics and interdisciplinary research. A track record of independent work is also essential. An interest in and the ability to engage in linking mathematics to biology, specifically the relationship between pathogen ecology and pathogen genomic data is desirable.
