Applications are invited for the above post based at University Park, Nottingham to undertake research in the development of a novel low pressure measurement technique for measuring the airtightness of buildings. The appointed person will join the newly amalgamated and interdisciplinary Architecture, Climate & Environment Research Group, whose members have collectively obtained approx. £7M income in the past five years from UK and EU funding and industry. This current post arises as part of a TSB funded project under the Scaling Up Retrofit call. The UoN has five partners on the project, namely EPS Ltd, AND Technology Research Ltd, Elmhurst Energy Systems Ltd, National Energy Foundation Ltd, and Absolute Air & Gas Ltd.
The project builds on a novel concept developed and proven by the UoN, which is now ready to be brought closer to market. The key objectives of the overall project are: prototyping and validation of a turnkey low pressure airtightness measuring device; undertaking field trials in pre and post-retrofit dwellings; the development of an air leakage performance database. The successful candidate will be required to: (i) conduct a thorough appraisal of the concept developed by the UoN and other instrumentation on the market; (ii) work closely with project partners to produce the necessary firmware, software and hardware components for a working prototype to be built; (iii) work with the partners to validate the prototype through laboratory and in-situ field testing; (iv) present the research to the consortium and external parties; (v) write journal and conference papers; (vi) prepare proposals for further funding of related research.
Candidates must hold a degree (or equivalent) and/or PhD (or equivalent) (or be near completion) in building services/physics or a closely related area. Evidence of collaborating successfully with industry partners on past research projects is essential. Experience of building assessment procedures, natural ventilation, infiltration and airtightness measurement is highly desirable, as is experience of carrying out the design, construction, and testing of prototypes. Experience of using CFD, building modelling software and Matlab programming is desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
This full time, fixed-term post and will be offered for a period of 13 months.
