Research Associates / Research Assistants Advanced Processor Technologies Group

Applications are invited to join the team working on the SpiNNaker project, part of the Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) group within the School of Computer Science at Manchester. The APT group is a world-leading research centre, continuing the long and distinguished record of the University of Manchester in the field of Computer Architecture.

The SpiNNaker architecture is optimized to support the simulation of simple (point-like) neurons and their connections (or synapses). This architecture now has a world-wide user base, drawn to a reliable and flexible platform for real-time neural network simulation; this community is comprised of both traditional computational neuroscientists and also scientists and engineers from application areas such as robotics.

You should have knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

Hardware system development and commissioning including FPGA design, basic robotics, circuit board testing, microprocessor systems, ARM processors.System software development including operating systems, parallel computing, C and Python programming.

It is also essential that candidates for the Research Associate appointments should possess proven research ability with a PhD or other equivalent experience. Research Assistant applicants should possess a good / relevant MSc or other equivalent experience.

The first position is linked to the PRiME EPSRC-funded Programme Grant led by the University of Southampton, with Imperial College, London, and the Universities of Manchester and Newcastle as partners. This position will run from 1st January 2014 until 12th May 2018.

The second position is linked to funding from the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) and an EPSRC-funded collaborative grant led by the University of York with the Universities of Manchester and Southampton as partners. This position will run from 1st February 2014 until 31st July 2017.
