The Human Settlements Group at IIED are looking for a Researcher to develop, manage and implement a research programme and policy outreach in a thematic area or areas that are central to the Goals of the Human Settlements Group.

The Human Settlements Group (HSG) works to document the multiple dimensions of urban poverty and support grassroots-led initiatives to improve living conditions in urban centres of Latin America, Asia and Africa. It aims to combine this with promoting good governance, more ecologically sustainable patterns of urban development and urban-rural linkages, and resilience to climate change for the most vulnerable groups.

This is a newly created role that is intended to strengthen The Human Settlements Group’s research on urbanisation and environment and development goals. While the position is not tied specifically to a single area of work, we anticipate that the post holder will be able to contribute to our existing areas of work, while bringing new knowledge and skills.

To succeed in this role you must have a post-graduate qualification in a relevant social or environmental science discipline, with a focus on urban issues. You will have demonstrated an ability to support and manage complex projects, experience of conducting research in urban issues, including their environmental dimensions, demonstrated by an emerging publications record. You will have an awareness of international policy frameworks and development aid policies concerning urban poverty and the links with sustainable development. You will be fluent in English with excellent communication skills, demonstrated by the ability to negotiate, influence and collaborate with a diverse range of cultures both in writing and verbally. Some expertise in mapping would be an advantage, and we welcome candidates with an interest in gender and youth issues.
