Statistician Research Fellow
We are looking for a highly motivated statistician who can provide high-quality expertise and support to UK healthcare researchers through the activities of Research Design Service (RDS) London and the Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit (PCTU).
The PCTU is a UKCRC-registered Clinical Trials Unit which specialises in trials of interventions as they would be delivered in practice, and which currently supports a broad portfolio of funded studies in healthcare as well as pursuing methodological research. RDS London is funded by the National Institute for Health Research and provides free advice to researchers when they are applying for funding, with the aim of improving the quality and impact of publicly-funded research in health and social care. Both units provide a high standard of multidisciplinary research support. You will be joining a team of thirteen statisticians already working within the PCTU at different levels.
The purpose of this post is to lead the delivery of advice on statistics and quantitative research methods to researchers who consult RDS London at Queen Mary, University of London (and occasionally those referred by RDS South East region), and to lead the statistical aspects of particular studies supported by the PCTU from development through to publication. The post will also involve providing statistical consultancy to researchers in the Blizard Institute conducting international research on the treatment of tuberculosis and HIV with the long-term support of the PCTU. In addition, the post-holder will be expected to do a small amount of teaching.
The post requires an ability to take responsibility for the statistical aspects of research projects, and to communicate effectively with staff from a range of disciplines and at all levels. You should have an interest in new developments in quantitative research methods, particularly in clinical trial design and practice, and you will need a good understanding of sources of UK funding for health research. The ability to work independently and a desire to contribute to the strategic development of both RDS and the PCTU are essential. You will possess a higher degree in statistics or equivalent, and have experience of contributing to collaborative grant applications including for clinical trials, and of a wide range of statistical techniques. A track record in methodological research would be an advantage.

This post is full-time and fixed term for 3 years starting in February 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. Starting salary will be in the range £42,601 to £47,559 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.
