Research Assistant: Barriers to self-management in primary care

Pain Concern is looking for a research assistant to work part-time on two projects which will investigate the factors in primary care settings preventing or hindering patients’ self-management of chronic pain. The research will be carried out with the overall aim of developing practical evidence-based solutions to the problems we identify.

Duration: Ten months, fixed term.

Start date: As soon as possible after appointment and no later than March 4, 2014.

Salary: £20,000 for four days per week (hours variable); equivalent to £28,800 pro rata.

To apply for this position please send a cover letter of no more than 500 words and a CV to research@painconcern.org.uk via the Apply button by January 7, 2014. Pain Concern operates an equal opportunities policy.

Interviews will be held in Glasgow on Tuesday January 21, 2014. Shortlisted candidates will be expected to prepare and present a short presentation responding to a question related to the project.

Description of the projects

The first project will cover primary care services across Scotland while the second project focuses on primary care services in the Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation catchment area. Research will be carried out in three stages: interviews, focus groups and pilot studies of proposed solutions (see Additional Information for more details). The day-to-day running of the projects will be overseen by the Project Steering Group (PSG) and further guidance on methodology and strategy will be provided by the Project Management Group (PMG) consisting of people living with pain and professional experts in the field. You will report directly to the PSG.

Description of the role

You will be based at Pain Concern’s office in Edinburgh and be responsible for reaching out to potential partners (healthcare professionals, pain clinics, university departments, charities) to develop stages 1 and 2 of the project. This will include recruiting focus group participants and interviewees (people in pain, their relatives and carers, and healthcare professionals); and ensuring provision of appropriate settings for focus group sessions and interviews in selected locations across Scotland.

You will collect and analyse data from the focus groups and interviews and contribute to dissemination of the findings in, for example, research papers and public outreach activities. You will also be involved in the process of systematic review of the existing literature in collaboration with the PSG and PMG.

You will carry out the work with the guidance of Professor Nick Allcock of Glasgow Caledonian University, who will act as contributing author on any research outputs, and with the support of the PSG. You will also work closely with Pain Concern staff and volunteers who will manage the project on a day-to-day basis.
