Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join a multidisciplinary research group in the Earth Science & Engineering Department at Imperial College, investigating pore-scale mechanisms and upscaling of reactive transport in the subsurface. This is a cutting-edge joint project with Magnetic Resonance Research Centre (MRRC) group at the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge sponsored by EPSRC, and aimed at a better understanding of physicochemical processes during enhanced oil recovery, carbon storage and contaminant transport in aquifers and oil & gas reservoirs.
Over the last twelve years the Imperial College Consortium on Pore-Scale Modelling has developed a suite of software to predict transport, reaction and multi-phase flow properties for geological porous media. We now have a validated workflow that simulates flow and transport processes on three-dimensional X-ray tomography images of rock samples and then predicts different properties, such as probability density functions (PDFs) of velocity, transit time or displacement, dispersion coefficients, NMR response, relative permeability and non-Newtonian flow. Moreover, we have access to several imaging labs with the state-of-the-art micro-CT and synchrotron X-ray sources that can be used for imaging flow and transport in subsurface rock.
This research project aims to develop a novel approach for pore-scale modeling of reactive transport on X-ray images of rock cores, validate the model with the NMR experiments on the identical cores, and upscale the reactive transport properties. The goal is to elucidate the relationship between structural, flow, transport and reaction properties that govern reactive transport through application of a novel methodology that relies on full information on PDFs of velocity, transit time and displacement. It will analyze the impact of structure, flow, transport and reaction parameters to propose a more rigorous and robust reactive transport modelling methodology that correctly captures physicochemical processes at multiple scales
We would like to receive applications from candidates with knowledge & understanding of reactive flow simulations and skills in writing numerical codes in C++, Fortran or Matlab. The research project will be undertaken within the Petroleum Geoscience and Engineering Section of the Department of Earth Science & Engineering at Imperial College London.
Applicants are expected to hold a PhD (or equivalent) in any of the following disciplines: Petroleum Engineering, Computing, Physics or Chemical Engineering. You will join a dynamic, close-knit, interdisciplinary research team that has many links with academia & industry. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their research career over a longer timescale.
