The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Durham University invites applications for a postdoctoral position, to begin in October 2014 for a 12 month period. The position is funded by an EPSRC grant entitled 'Theory of Badly approximable sets'. Candidates with research interests in Diophantine approximation or related topics of analytical number theory/dynamic systems are encouraged to apply. The researcher will work independently on projects within the general area of research supported by the grant in collaboration with Dr Dzmitry Badziahin.

Requirements
The postholder is expected to play an active role in identifying suitable directions, within the broad framework of the grant, to best advance the overall research programmeHe/she will carry out first class research and present his/her work at seminars, both internally and externally, and at international conferences, and will publish results in international scientific journals and open access electronic archives.Conduct individual and collaborative research projects.Use initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.Liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.Plan and manage their own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.Person Specification
Essential Criteria
PhD in Pure Mathematics.Proven ability to conduct independent research.Ability to use initiative and creativity to identify areas for research.Ability to develop research objectives and to use new research techniques and methods.Ability to present and exchange ideas in a team.Proven ability to write research papers, and to present research results at international conferences.Desirable Criteria
